Beechpuun is a fictional deciduous tree species described in speculative ecology as part of the beech family (Fagaceae). In the imagined flora, beechpuun is a medium- to large-sized tree that typically reaches 20–25 meters tall, with a straight trunk and smooth gray bark that develops shallow fissures with age. The crown is broad and spreading. Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, 6–12 cm long, with serrated margins and a distinct three-veined base; they resemble those of real beeches and turn yellow to copper in autumn. The species flowers in late spring with small, wind-pollinated catkins and produces nuts encased in a papery involucre, similar to beech mast.

Distribution and habitat

Endemic to temperate montane and lowland forests of the fictional continent of Eldoria, beechpuun is adapted to moist, well-drained soils and can form dense stands in mixed deciduous forests at altitudes from 200 to 1,300 meters. It often coexists with oaks and maples and forms ectomycorrhizal associations.

Ecology and uses

In ecosystems, beechpuun provides mast for small mammals and birds; its wood is pale, hard, and fine-grained, suitable for furniture and flooring in the lore. Coppicing can be used for understorey management in forestry. In cultivation, it is valued ornamentally for its stately form and autumn color.

The name beechpuun combines "beech" with the root "puun," meaning tree in several Uralic languages, reflecting an imagined cross-linguistic naming convention.
