Barriärkräm, or barrier cream, is a topical preparation designed to protect and reinforce the skin’s natural barrier. It forms an occlusive film on the skin surface that reduces transepidermal water loss and helps shield the skin from irritants, friction, and moisture. Barrier creams are used to prevent dermatitis and skin irritation in people exposed to wet environments, cleansers, solvents, or incontinence-associated dermatitis, as well as to support skin recovery after damage.

Common ingredients include occlusive emollients such as petrolatum and dimethicone, which create a protective layer, as well as waxes and mineral oils. Many formulations also feature lipids and ceramides (often with cholesterol and fatty acids) to help restore the lipid barrier, and some include soothing agents like panthenol or allantoin. Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic versions are available for sensitive skin.

Barriärkräm is commonly applied to clean, dry skin, with reapplication as needed based on exposure and manufacturer recommendations. It is often used on the perineal area for individuals with incontinence, on hands exposed to irritants in occupational settings, or on areas prone to friction. It is distinct from ordinary moisturizers in that it emphasizes barrier restoration and protection, though some products combine moisturizing and barrier-forming properties.

Safety considerations include the possibility of allergic reaction to ingredients such as lanolin, fragrances, or preservatives.
