Bandtypes is a term used to describe categories of bands, typically based on membership, function, or genre. It is not a single standardized technical term, but a descriptive label that varies by context. In music, bandtypes commonly refer to the size and composition of an ensemble, as well as its intended role in performance and recording.

Size-based bandtypes include solo acts, duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and larger ensembles such as brass bands or big bands. Each size tends to have distinct performance dynamics, repertoire considerations, and onstage logistics, influencing arrangements, rehearsal approaches, and audience expectations.

Functional bandtypes describe how a band operates or earns its living. These include original bands (group members primarily write and perform original material), cover bands (performing songs by others), tribute bands (recreating the style of a specific artist or era), studio bands (focused on recording sessions), and touring or festival bands (organized for travel and live appearances). These distinctions affect branding, licensing, booking practices, and contractual terms.

Genre-based bandtypes categorize groups by musical style, such as rock bands, jazz ensembles, metal bands, folk groups, brass bands, or string quartets. In practice, many bands cross multiple genres, making genre labels useful but not exclusive.

In cataloging and metadata, bandtype attributes help with discovery and filtering, alongside genre, location, and activity. The term remains context-dependent; in electronics or communications, “band” may refer to frequency bands, where “bandtypes” would have a separate technical meaning altogether.
