A bandleader is a musician who leads a band or ensemble, setting the musical direction, pace, and overall performance. In practice, a bandleader may act as conductor, arranger, and public representative, depending on the ensemble. The primary duties include selecting repertoire, preparing arrangements or overseeing composers and arrangers, conducting or cueing entrances, coordinating tempos, dynamics, and phrasing, and guiding soloists within the group. Bandleaders also organize rehearsals, assemble personnel, manage scheduling and finances, and often oversee bookings and public appearances.

In jazz and popular music, the bandleader is typically the featured leader who steers the group's artistic direction and improvisational approach. In marching or military-style bands, the term bandmaster is more common and the role emphasizes discipline and ceremonial duties, though the terms can be used interchangeably in some contexts.

Historical note: The position gained prominence during the big band era of the 1930s–1940s in the United States; notable bandleaders include Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and others who defined the sound and repertoire of the genre.
