Ballastverdrängung, a German term often translated as "ballast displacement" or "substructure displacement," refers to the concept of the ballast layer in railway tracks displacing weight from the underlying substructure. This displacement is crucial for the load-bearing capacity and stability of the track. When a train passes over a section of track, the load is transmitted through the rails, then to the sleepers (or ties), and finally distributed to the ballast layer. The ballast, typically composed of crushed stone or gravel, acts as a flexible foundation that spreads the concentrated load from the sleepers over a much wider area of the sub-ballast and the formation (the prepared ground beneath the track).

The effectiveness of ballastverdrängung depends on several factors, including the quality and gradation of the ballast material, the depth of the ballast layer, and the compaction achieved.
