Ballast systems are mechanisms used to add or remove weight from a vessel or vehicle to improve its stability, control its buoyancy, or adjust its trim. The principle behind ballast systems is the manipulation of weight distribution to achieve a desired equilibrium.

In maritime applications, ballast is crucial for the safe operation of ships. Tanks filled with water are commonly used as ballast. When a ship is unloaded, water is pumped into ballast tanks to maintain stability and prevent it from listing excessively. Conversely, when a ship takes on cargo, ballast water can be pumped out. This process is essential for submerging the vessel to a safe draft and ensuring proper trim, which is the longitudinal angle of the ship. Ballast water management also plays a significant role in preventing the introduction of invasive aquatic species into new environments, as water is often exchanged at sea.

Submarines employ ballast systems for submergence and surfacing. They utilize a series of ballast tanks that can be flooded with seawater to decrease buoyancy and dive, or filled with compressed air to expel water and increase buoyancy, allowing them to ascend. The precise control of these tanks enables submarines to maintain neutral buoyancy at a desired depth.

Beyond maritime uses, ballast systems are also found in other contexts. For instance, aircraft may use ballast to adjust weight distribution for optimal flight characteristics or during testing. In some industrial processes, ballast might be used to stabilize equipment or counteract forces. The fundamental concept remains the same: strategically adding or removing weight to achieve or maintain a specific balance or state.
