Bakteriebelægning, often referred to as bacterial plaque or dental biofilm, is a sticky, colorless to pale yellow film that constantly forms on teeth. It is primarily composed of bacteria and their byproducts, along with saliva components, food debris, and other oral substances. These bacteria thrive in the warm, moist environment of the mouth and feed on sugars and starches present in food.

The formation of bakteriebelægning is a natural process. However, if not removed regularly through proper oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing, it can accumulate and lead to various oral health problems. The bacteria within the plaque produce acids as they metabolize sugars. These acids can erode tooth enamel, leading to the development of cavities or dental caries.
