Horizontal gene transfer and co-evolution shape the diversity of plant-associated bacteria.

Applications and research. The bacterialplant concept informs agricultural practices, including the development of biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. Researchers study microbiomes to improve disease resistance and nutrient use efficiency, often using metagenomics, transcriptomics, and genome sequencing. Remaining challenges include context-dependence of interactions, regulatory considerations, and the complexity of translating laboratory results to field conditions.
