Backlightteknik refers to the technology used to illuminate the display of electronic devices, such as monitors, televisions, smartphones, and tablets. The primary purpose of backlightteknik is to provide a light source that shines through a display panel, allowing images to be seen. Without a backlight, most modern display technologies would be too dim to be useful in typical viewing conditions.

Historically, cathode ray tube (CRT) displays did not require a backlight as they generated their own light. However, with the advent of flat-panel displays like LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), backlighting became a crucial component. For LCDs, the backlight is a separate light source that illuminates the liquid crystals, which then modulate the light to create the image. Different types of backlighting exist for LCDs, including CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) and LED (Light-Emitting Diode). LED backlighting has largely replaced CCFL due to its energy efficiency, thinner profile, and improved brightness and color reproduction.

OLED displays are inherently self-emissive, meaning each pixel generates its own light. Therefore, OLED technology does not require a separate backlight. This fundamental difference contributes to OLEDs' superior contrast ratios, true blacks, and faster response times compared to backlit LCDs. The evolution of backlightteknik continues to focus on improving energy efficiency, color accuracy, brightness levels, and thinness for display devices.
