Azolilääkkeet, also known as azoles, are a class of antifungal medications. They work by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is essential for the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes. Ergosterol is a vital component of fungal cell membranes, and its depletion disrupts membrane integrity and function, leading to fungal cell death or inhibited growth.

Azole antifungals are widely used to treat a variety of fungal infections, ranging from superficial skin and nail infections to more serious systemic mycoses. They are available in various formulations, including topical creams, oral tablets, and intravenous solutions, depending on the type and severity of the infection.

Common azole antifungals include fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, and clotrimazole. Each has a slightly different spectrum of activity and pharmacokinetic profile, influencing their use in specific clinical situations. For instance, fluconazole is often the first-line treatment for candidiasis, while itraconazole is effective against a broader range of fungi, including Aspergillus species.

While generally effective, azole antifungals can cause side effects.
