This arrangement is less common than the more typical axodendritic synapse, where an axon connects to a dendritic spine or shaft, but it plays a significant role in neural communication and circuit dynamics.

In an axondendrite synapse, the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, which then bind to receptors on the dendritic membrane of the postsynaptic neuron.
