The axontocellbody, also known as the axon hillock, is a specialized region of a neuron. It is the part of the cell body, or soma, from which the axon originates. This area is crucial for the generation of action potentials, the electrical signals that neurons use to communicate. The axontocellbody is characterized by a high concentration of voltage-gated sodium channels. These channels play a pivotal role in initiating and propagating the action potential.

The axontocellbody acts as an integration zone for synaptic inputs. Signals received by the neuron's dendrites and soma are transmitted to the axontocellbody. If the sum of these excitatory and inhibitory signals reaches a certain threshold, the voltage-gated sodium channels in the axontocellbody open, leading to a rapid influx of sodium ions. This influx causes a depolarization that triggers an action potential, which then travels down the axon. The axontocellbody's strategic location at the junction between the soma and the axon makes it the ideal site for this critical decision-making process in neuronal signaling. Its structure is also distinct, often lacking the rough endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes found in the rest of the soma.
