Axialtoequatorial refers to the conversion of a substituent's position on a cyclic molecule, typically a six-membered ring like cyclohexane, from an axial orientation to an equatorial orientation, or vice versa. In such rings, substituents can exist in one of two distinct spatial arrangements relative to the plane of the ring. An axial substituent points directly up or down, parallel to the axis of the ring. An equatorial substituent points outward from the ring, roughly perpendicular to the ring axis.

Cyclohexane rings are not planar but adopt a chair conformation. This chair conformation is dynamic, undergoing a process called ring inversion. During ring inversion, the two ends of the ring effectively swap positions, and in doing so, all axial substituents become equatorial, and all equatorial substituents become axial. This equilibrium between the two chair conformers is temperature-dependent.

The preference for a substituent to be in an axial or equatorial position is governed by steric and electronic factors. Generally, larger substituents experience unfavorable steric interactions with other atoms in the axial position, particularly the 1,3-diaxial interactions. These interactions lead to a higher energy state for the axial conformer. Consequently, the equilibrium usually favors the conformer where the largest substituent is in the equatorial position, as this minimizes steric strain. The term axialtoequatorial specifically describes this change in orientation during the ring inversion process.
