Axelform is a term used in gymnastics and figure skating to describe a specific type of jump or salto. It is characterized by a forward takeoff, a horizontal rotation in the air, and a forward landing. The most common example of an axelform jump is the single axel, which involves one and a half rotations in the air. Double, triple, and quadruple axels are more advanced variations requiring significant skill and training. The axel is often considered one of the most difficult jumps due to the extra half rotation caused by the forward takeoff.
The name "axel" originates from its inventor, Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen, who first performed the
