Avtørkende is an adjective used in Norwegian to describe something that dries or facilitates drying. The term appears in several contexts, including chemistry, painting, and industrial processing. In general, a substance or process described as avtørkende reduces moisture content either by evaporation or by moisture absorption.

In chemistry and materials science, avtørkende midler (desiccants) are substances that remove water vapor from the surrounding environment. Common examples include silica gel, activated alumina, calcium chloride, and molecular sieves.
