Avståndsinställning, often translated as "focus adjustment" or "distance setting" in English, refers to the process of adjusting a lens or optical device so that a specific object or plane appears sharp and clear. This is crucial for achieving a well-defined image, whether in photography, microscopy, or general vision correction.

In photography, avståndsinställning is commonly achieved by rotating a focus ring on the lens. This physically moves lens elements to change the distance at which light converges onto the image sensor or film. Manual focus requires the user to actively adjust this ring until the desired subject is sharp. Autofocus systems, on the other hand, use internal mechanisms to automatically detect and adjust the focus based on various algorithms.

For instance, in telescopes and microscopes, adjusting the distance between the objective lens and the eyepiece is necessary to bring distant stars or microscopic specimens into sharp view.
