Once collected, wastewater arrives at a treatment plant. Here, it undergoes a series of physical, biological, and sometimes chemical processes to remove solids, organic matter, nutrients, and other contaminants. Primary treatment involves screening and sedimentation to remove larger debris and settleable solids. Secondary treatment uses microorganisms to break down dissolved and suspended organic matter. Tertiary treatment, if implemented, further refines the water quality, often by removing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus or disinfecting the effluent.

The final stage involves the discharge of treated effluent into receiving waters, such as rivers, lakes, or the sea, or its reuse for purposes like irrigation. Sludge, the solid byproduct of wastewater treatment, is also managed, often undergoing further treatment before disposal or beneficial reuse, such as in agriculture.
