An avluftningsventilen, commonly translated as an air vent or air release valve, is a crucial component in various fluid systems, particularly those involving water or heating. Its primary function is to automatically or manually release trapped air from the system. Air can accumulate in pipes due to several factors, including dissolved gases coming out of solution, leakage, or during initial system filling.

The presence of air in a system can lead to significant problems. It can reduce the efficiency of heating or cooling systems by creating air pockets that impede fluid flow. In water pipes, trapped air can cause noise, such as banging or gurgling sounds, and can also lead to corrosion and reduced pressure.

Avluftningsventiler are typically installed at high points in a system where air is most likely to collect. They operate on the principle that air is lighter than water. When air accumulates, it rises to the top and enters the vent. The valve mechanism, often a float-operated lever or a bimetallic strip, responds to the presence of air and opens a small orifice, allowing the air to escape. Once the air is expelled and fluid rises, the valve closes automatically, preventing fluid loss. Manual avluftningsventiler require a user to turn a knob or key to release the air. These are often found on radiators.
