The work is typically defended in a public disputation, a formal defense, after the manuscript has been reviewed and approved by the faculty.

Two main formats are common: a monograph, which presents a single, coherent study, and a compilation thesis (sammanställd avhandling), which assembles several published or publishable articles accompanied by an introductory synthesis and closing discussion. The choice often depends on disciplinary norms and university regulations.

The doctoral process generally includes admission as a doctoral student, supervision by a professor or senior researcher, and completion of any required coursework. After data collection and writing, the candidate submits the dissertation manuscript for assessment. The work is evaluated by external opponents and an examination committee. The defense is a public event in which the candidate presents the research and answers questions from the opponents and the committee. A successful outcome leads to the awarding of the doctorate.

Most avhandlingar are deposited in the university library and made available through digital repositories. Many are published or archived as open access, though some may have embargo periods or access restrictions if they contain sensitive material.
