Autoshampoo, also called car shampoo, is a cleaning product designed for washing the exterior surfaces of motor vehicles. It is formulated to remove dirt, dust, oily residues, and other contaminants without stripping waxes or sealants when used as directed. Autoshampoo differs from household detergents in its lubricity and typically balanced pH, reducing the risk of scratching during hand washing or when used with wash mitts.

Most autoshampoos are based on surfactants that create foam and lift dirt away from the paint surface. Many products are water-based and contain additives such as lubricants, chelating agents, and sometimes wax or polymer additives to enhance gloss or provide short-term protection. Formulations vary, with some marketed as pH-neutral and others mildly alkaline; phosphate-containing formulas are less common due to environmental concerns.

Usage generally involves diluting a concentrated product with water according to the label, applying with a damp wash mitt or sponge, and rinsing thoroughly. A two-bucket method (one for soapy water, one for rinse) is commonly recommended to minimize dirt transfer. It is advisable to wash in shade, avoid hot surfaces, and dry with a clean microfiber towel to prevent water spots and scratching. After washing, wax or sealant treatments may be reapplied as needed.

Variants include ready-to-use liquids, concentrates, and formulations designed to work with foam cannons or pressure washers. Some products claim to provide temporary lubrication or surface protection; others emphasize environmental safety and biodegradability.
