Automobils, in general, refer to self-propelled road vehicles designed for the transport of people and goods. The term automobils is an older or less common plural form; in modern English the widespread term is automobiles or cars. Etymologically, automobile combines auto- (self) with mobile (capable of movement).

Origins lie in the late 19th century with experiments by inventors such as Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, who produced the first practical internal combustion vehicles. Early models were costly and hand-built; mass production techniques, notably those developed by Henry Ford in the early 20th century, made cars affordable and widely available.

Most automobils today use a four-wheeled chassis with a powertrain that can be internal combustion, electric, or hybrid. Key components include the engine or motor, transmission, suspension, steering, brakes, and safety systems. Over time, automation and electronics have become integral, with features such as antilock brakes, airbags, and advanced driver-assistance systems.

Automobils reshaped transportation, urban development, and economies, enabling long-distance travel and decentralization of cities. They have also raised environmental concerns, leading to regulations on emissions, fuel economy standards, and the development of alternative drivetrains. The industry remains one of the largest sectors in manufacturing.

Today the focus is on efficiency, electrification, and connectivity, with widespread adoption of electric vehicles and hybrids, ongoing improvements in safety, and debates about mobility, congestion, and sustainability.
