Authenticitet is a term used in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish to denote the quality of being real, genuine, or true. It can describe objects whose claimed origin is accurate, performances that reflect their stated tradition, or people acting in accordance with their own beliefs. In philosophy and cultural studies, authenticitet is analyzed as a relation between appearance, origin, and meaning, often in tension with norms of conformity or simulacrum.

Origin and usage. It derives from Latin authentus and entered Scandinavian languages via French and Germanic routes. In modern usage it forms part of discussions about cultural heritage, personal integrity, and social legitimacy. The concept is not merely about factual truth but about experiential and moral sincerity.

Philosophical dimension. In existentialism and phenomenology, authenticity means living in accordance with one’s own values and possibilities rather than following external roles. Heidegger contrasts authentic life (Eigentlichkeit) with inauthentic repetition, urging awareness of finitude and mortality as guides to self-directed choice. Similar strands appear in Kierkegaard and later thinkers who emphasize self-constitution and truthfulness.

Art, artifacts, and heritage. In art and cultural heritage, authenticity concerns the genuineness of an object, its provenance, and its relationship to tradition. The question of originality versus reproduction is central in museums, conservation, and the art market. The philosopher Walter Benjamin argued that mechanized reproduction can strip or transform an artwork’s aura, complicating traditional notions of authenticity.

Contemporary usage and critique. In media and consumer culture, authenticity is a valued attribute for persons, brands, and experiences. Critics warn that it can be instrumentalized or marketed as a norm, and that authenticity may be culturally relative or strategically deployed. Scholars stress that it is best understood as a dynamic, context-dependent quality rather than an essential property.
