ausgeschieden

Ausgeschieden is the past participle of the German verb ausscheiden. It denotes that someone or something has exited, withdrawn, or been eliminated from a process, a competition, or a position. The term is widely used in everyday language and in formal reporting.

In sports and competitions, ausgeschieden describes teams or competitors that did not advance to the next round. For example: Die Mannschaft ist im Viertelfinale ausgeschieden. In knockout formats, participants are eliminated step by step, and phrases such as aus dem Turnier ausgeschieden or aus dem Wettbewerb ausgeschieden are common in match reports and summaries.

In non-sport contexts, the term can refer to leaving a post or withdrawing from a candidacy or election. Examples include aus dem Amt ausgeschieden or aus dem Amt scheiden. The expression aus dem Rennen ausgeschieden is used when a candidate withdraws from the race or is eliminated from consideration.

There is also a separate, unrelated sense in biology and medicine. Ausscheiden means to excrete or secrete substances from an organism, as in Die Substanz wird ausgeschieden.
