An auktorial narrator, also referred to as an authorial or omniscient narrator, is a narrative voice external to the story who provides knowledge and commentary beyond what any single character could know. The narrator can describe events, settings, and backstory, reveal thoughts and motives of multiple characters, and guide the reader's interpretation of the narrative. In many cases the auktorial voice comments on actions, evaluates moral choices, and even interrupts the progress of the plot to provide context or thematic framing.
