Auditories refers to the auditory system and its component structures involved in hearing. In anatomical usage, the term emphasizes the collection of peripheral organs and neural pathways that convert sound into neural signals and perceptual experience.

The peripheral ear is traditionally divided into outer, middle, and inner sections. The outer ear includes the pinna and external auditory canal, which collect and direct sound toward the tympanic membrane. The middle ear contains the tympanic membrane and a chain of three auditory ossicles—the malleus, incus, and stapes—that transmit vibrations to the inner ear. The inner ear houses the cochlea, where mechanical vibrations are transformed into neural signals by hair cells on the organ of Corti, and the vestibular apparatus, which contributes to balance but is anatomically adjacent.

Auditory signals travel via the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII) to brainstem nuclei, then to the midbrain, thalamus, and finally the auditory cortex in the temporal lobe. The system is organized tonotopically, preserving a spatial map of frequency from the cochlea through higher processing centers. In humans, the audible range lies roughly from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with sensitivity and range diminishing with age.

Functions of the auditories include detection of pitch, loudness, and timbre; sound localization using interaural time and level differences; and higher-level perception of speech and music. Variation exists across species in middle-ear anatomy and frequency range, such as mammals with three auditory ossicles versus certain vertebrates that employ a single columella. Clinically, auditory dysfunction can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed, with interventions ranging from hearing aids to cochlear implants and protective strategies to prevent damage.
