Attribute mapping is the process of aligning and translating data attributes from one data model, schema, or source system to another so that data can be exchanged, reconciled, or provisioned accurately. It identifies which source attributes correspond to which target attributes, and may apply transformations to ensure compatibility.

Attribute mapping is central to data integration, data warehousing, ETL processes, and identity and access management. In IAM contexts, it enables provisioning and de-provisioning by mapping user attributes from source directories or HR systems to target provisioning schemas used by applications. In data integration, mapping connects disparate schemas so that records from multiple sources can be merged and analyzed. Standards-based environments such as SAML, SCIM, or OpenID Connect often rely on predefined attribute mappings to release user information to consuming services.

Common mapping types include direct mappings (one-to-one attribute name and value transfer), derived mappings (computed values, concatenations, or data type conversions), constant mappings (fixed values), and lookup mappings (values derived from reference data). Transformations may handle data type conversions, normalization, trimming, or date formatting. Challenges include schema drift, data quality issues, privacy and consent constraints, and performance considerations for large datasets.

Best practices involve establishing a canonical data model, maintaining a centralized mapping repository with version control, documenting mapping rules, and implementing automated testing and monitoring. Clear governance and change management help ensure mappings remain accurate as source schemas evolve.
