Atomiseringskilder, often translated as atomizing sources or atomizers, are essential components in analytical chemistry and materials science, particularly in techniques that require the conversion of a sample into a fine mist of atoms or ions for analysis. These sources are designed to break down macroscopic material into its constituent atoms, making them available for spectroscopic or other analytical measurements. The primary goal of an atomiser is to overcome the forces holding atoms together in the sample matrix.

Various types of atomiseringskilder exist, each with its own advantages and applications. Flame atomizers are commonly used in atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometry. In these systems, a liquid sample is aspirated into a flame, typically burning propane, acetylene, or nitrous oxide with air or oxygen. The high temperature of the flame causes the solvent to evaporate, the analyte to decompose into free atoms, and the sample matrix to be dispersed.

Electrothermal atomizers, such as graphite furnaces, offer higher sensitivity than flame atomizers. The sample is placed in a graphite tube, which is then heated electrically in stages. This process involves drying, charring, and finally, atomization at temperatures reaching several thousand degrees Celsius. The confined environment of the graphite furnace leads to reduced diffusion of atoms, increasing their residence time and thus enhancing the analytical signal.

Other atomisation techniques include inductively coupled plasma (ICP) sources, which use radiofrequency energy to generate a plasma of argon gas at extremely high temperatures. ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry) and ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) are powerful techniques that utilize plasma atomization to achieve excellent sensitivity and broad elemental coverage. Laser ablation is another method, where a laser beam vaporizes a small amount of solid sample directly, producing an atomic plume that can then be analyzed.
