The athame is generally not used for mundane cutting or physical tasks; its power is considered symbolic and spiritual.

Physically, an athame is typically a small to medium-sized blade, often 6 to 12 inches in length. The blade is usually metal and the handle can be made from wood, metal, bone, or other materials. In many traditions the blade is edged, but it is treated as a sacred tool and is kept separate from kitchen knives and other everyday implements. The athame is usually consecrated and kept on the altar or in a dedicated sheath when not in use.

The exact origin of the term athame is uncertain, and the tool’s modern form largely emerged with the rise of contemporary witches and Wicca in the 20th century.
