Asplenia is a rare congenital or acquired condition characterized by the absence of a spleen. The spleen is an organ located in the upper left abdomen that plays a vital role in the immune system, filtering blood and helping to fight infections. When the spleen is absent, the body's ability to combat certain types of bacteria is significantly reduced, particularly encapsulated bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and Neisseria meningitidis.

Congenital asplenia, present from birth, is often associated with other serious developmental abnormalities, particularly within the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems. It is a component of several complex genetic syndromes. Acquired asplenia, on the other hand, can occur later in life due to various medical conditions or treatments. This includes surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy), often performed due to trauma, certain blood disorders like thalassemia or lymphoma, or splenic rupture. Certain diseases, such as sickle cell disease, can also lead to functional asplenia where the spleen becomes damaged and ineffective over time, even if it remains in place.

Individuals with asplenia are at an increased risk of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI), a life-threatening condition that can develop rapidly. To mitigate this risk, preventative measures are crucial. These typically include vaccinations against common encapsulated bacteria, daily low-dose penicillin or other antibiotics, and prompt medical attention for any signs of infection, such as fever. Education about the risks and necessary precautions is essential for all individuals diagnosed with asplenia.
