Arylsulfonihapot, or aryl sulfonic acids, are a class of organic compounds consisting of an aryl group bonded to a sulfonic acid moiety (-SO3H). The sulfonic acid group is highly acidic, making these compounds strong organic acids that often exist as their sulfonate salts in basic or neutral media. The aryl ring can bear various substituents, which influence reactivity, solubility, and directing effects in further reactions.

Most aryl sulfonic acids are prepared by electrophilic aromatic sulfonation of arenes with concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum, typically at elevated temperatures. The reaction attaches a sulfonyl group to the aromatic ring, yielding the arylsulfonic acid after workup. Desulfonation, the removal of the -SO3H group, can occur under heating with water or dilute acid, allowing interconversion with the parent arene in some cases. Substituents on the ring can direct sulfonation to different positions and affect the ease of desulfonation.

Examples and properties include benzenesulfonic acid (C6H5SO3H) and its derivatives, such as para-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH). Aryl sulfonic acids have pKa values in water that are very low (typically around -1 to -2), and they form stable salts with bases (sulfonates). The neutral acids are often solids or viscous liquids, depending on substituents.

Applications of aryl sulfonic acids are widespread. They serve as strong, non-volatile organic acid catalysts (notably TsOH) in various transformations. The corresponding sulfonate esters (tosylates) are important leaving groups in organic synthesis, enabling substitutions and eliminations. In industry, aryl sulfonates appear in detergents, dyes, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
