Arkivvärlden refers to the ecosystem surrounding archival work and the management of records and heritage materials. It encompasses institutions, professionals, and practices that aim to preserve information of historical, administrative, legal, or cultural value and to make it accessible for research, accountability, and public memory.

The most common actors are public archives—national, regional, and municipal—along with church, corporate, and private archives. In many countries, national archives preserve core government records and lead preservation standards; in Sweden, Riksarkivet is the central authority, with regional landsarkiv. Archives curate, acquire, and appraise records, arrange and describe them in finding aids, and provide access under legal and policy constraints, including privacy and security rules. The principle of public access to official documents shapes how records are managed and disclosed.

Archivists use metadata standards and description practices. International guidelines such as ISAD(G) for finding aids, EAD for encoding, and PREMIS for preservation metadata help ensure interoperability. Descriptive practices are complemented by workflows for accessioning, appraisal, and storage. Digital archives face challenges of format obsolescence, bit rot, and long-term preservation, addressed through migration, emulation, and adherence to models like OAIS.

Digitization and online access have expanded user communities. Researchers, journalists, and citizens increasingly rely on online catalogs, digitized records, and open data portals, while privacy, copyright, and sensitive information restrictions apply.

Key trends include increased digitization, born-digital preservation, collaborative networks, and professional standards development. The arkivvärlden serves as a bridge between memory institutions and the public, balancing preservation with access, accountability, and cultural heritage.
