Arkeologin, or archaeology, is the study of past human life and cultures through material remains. Compared with written histories, archaeology interprets evidence preserved in the ground.

Archaeologists employ stratigraphy, typology, and context to interpret deposits and artefacts, and increasingly use geographic information systems, remote sensing, and experimental archaeology.

Subfields include classical, prehistoric, maritime, and urban archaeology, as well as heritage management and public archaeology. Research covers subsistence, economy, trade, social organization, religion, technology, and cultural contact across regions and time.

Ethical practice emphasizes conservation, collaboration with descendant communities, and respectful handling of cultural property, with attention to repatriation and legal frameworks.

Education typically involves degrees in archaeology or anthropology, with field schools providing practical experience. Professionals work with universities, museums, cultural agencies, and local communities.
