Aristippus, often referred to as Aristippus of Cyrene, was an ancient Greek philosopher and the founder of the Cyrenaic school of hedonism. Born in Cyrene, a Greek colony in North Africa, around 435 BCE, he was a student of Socrates. Aristippus is known for his emphasis on pleasure as the highest good and the ultimate goal of life.

His philosophy, Cyrenaicism, posited that immediate, intense physical pleasures were the most valuable. He believed that one should focus on the present moment and maximize the enjoyment derived from sensory experiences. Unlike later hedonistic philosophies that might consider long-term consequences, Aristippus advocated for a life lived in the pursuit of immediate gratification. He also stressed the importance of prudence and self-control in selecting and enjoying pleasures, suggesting that true wisdom lay in the ability to choose the right pleasures and avoid those that lead to pain or suffering.

Aristippus is reported to have lived a life of considerable luxury and travel, engaging with various societies and rulers. His teachings, though sometimes perceived as advocating for a life of unrestrained indulgence, were more nuanced, emphasizing intelligent and discerning pursuit of pleasure. The Cyrenaic school, influenced by his ideas, continued to develop his doctrines after his death, though it eventually faded from prominence.
