Arhiva is a collection of records, documents, or data preserved for long-term reference and research. In Romanian usage, the term denotes both the institution that preserves such material and the collection itself. Archives may exist for public, corporate, religious, or private purposes and can be housed in physical buildings or maintained as digital repositories.

The main purposes of an archive are to preserve evidence of administrative and cultural activity, support accountability and historical research, and provide access to material for education and public memory. Archives select, organize, and describe records so that researchers can locate items and understand their context.

Organization and management of archives follow principles of provenance and original order (often summarized as respect des fonds). Records are grouped into fonds or series, accompanied by finding aids and metadata that describe contents, context, and provenance. Preservation efforts include physical conservation, climate control, and, for digital records, format migration and digital preservation practices to ensure ongoing accessibility.

Access and use of archives vary by institution and jurisdiction. Archives typically operate reading rooms and provide controlled access to materials, with privacy laws and copyright restrictions shaping what can be viewed. Many institutions publish online catalogs and digitized collections to broaden accessibility, sometimes with restricted access to sensitive items.

Digital archiving and challenges: Digital archives store, preserve, and provide access to electronic records. Standards and models such as OAIS, along with metadata schemes (for example Dublin Core and PREMIS), guide management and interoperability. Key challenges include format obsolescence, evolving copyright and privacy constraints, and the resources required to maintain long-term access.
