Arhaisms are a class of linguistic devices that revive, imitate, or manufacture forms intended to evoke older stages of a language. They occur in literature, cinema, video games, and online communities as a means to convey antiquity, authenticity, or satirical distance. The term is used by scholars to describe both genuine archaisms that persist in modern speech and neologisms crafted to sound archaic.

Origins and characteristics. The label arhaism emerged in modern scholarly discourse on revived diction in contemporary media. Arhaisms often blend authentic archaic morphemes with newly coined forms, employ pseudo-Latin or pseudo-Greek suffixes, and mimic older prose through inverted syntax or periphrasis. They may also feature spellings that imitate medieval or early modern orthography and selectively retain or reimpose second-person forms such as thou and thee in unconventional contexts.

Usage and reception. In fiction, gaming, and online culture, arhaisms create mood and world-building by signaling historical or fantastical setting. They range from transparent archaisms—methinks, verily, hark, lo, ye olde—to stylized coinages that resemble old spellings or ritual language. Critics warn that heavy use can disrupt readability or seem derivative, while proponents see arhaisms as a tool for immersion, texture, and satire.
