Apendektomiassa refers to the surgical removal of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. This procedure is most commonly performed to treat appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix that can cause severe pain and potentially lead to rupture.

The surgery can be done through two main methods: open appendectomy or laparoscopic appendectomy. An open appendectomy involves a single, larger incision in the lower right abdomen. A laparoscopic appendectomy, also known as keyhole surgery, uses a few small incisions and a camera-equipped instrument called a laparoscope to guide the surgeon. Laparoscopic surgery generally results in a shorter recovery time and less scarring.
