Anuvashta is a term from Ayurveda describing the administration of a medicated oil or fat (snehana) to the body. It refers to the use of a medicated oil or ghee either internally as part of snehana therapy or externally, most commonly as an enema (basti). In the context of bastis, Anuvashta Basti uses oil or ghee prepared with medicinal drugs to deliver substances through the rectum. The base substance is chosen to suit the patient’s prakriti (constitutional type) and disease, and the dosage is tailored to constitution, age, and strength.

Anuvashta Basti aims to lubricate and nourish the colon and surrounding tissues, calm vata, and support purification when combined with other panchakarma procedures. When taken orally as part of snehana, medicated oils or ghees are intended to permeate bodily channels and promote systemic oleation and gentle nourishment. The procedure is typically scheduled as part of a broader treatment plan to prepare for or complete detoxification therapies.

Preparation and safety considerations are central to Anuvashta therapy. The medicated oil or ghee is prepared with herbs, strained, and sometimes warmed to a suitable temperature before administration. Because the effects depend on individual constitution and health status, these therapies are usually performed under the supervision of a trained practitioner. They may be contraindicated in certain conditions, such as acute illness, pregnancy, or severe debility.

Relation to other terms: Anuvashta is contrasted with Niruha (kashaya) basti, which uses a decoction-based enema. Both are used in Panchakarma; the therapeutic plan may use one or both in sequence depending on the condition being treated.
