This enhances light transmission and improves the clarity and brightness of the viewed image.

The principle behind antireflection coatings relies on destructive interference. The coating is designed to have a specific thickness and refractive index, usually quarter-wavelength thickness relative to the target wavelength of light. When light strikes the coated surface, it reflects off both the top surface of the coating and the interface between the coating and the substrate. By carefully controlling the coating's properties, the reflected waves from these two surfaces are made to be out of phase, canceling each other out.

Antireflection coatings are crucial in many applications. In eyeglasses, they reduce glare, making vision more comfortable and improving the wearer's appearance by making the lenses appear more transparent. In cameras and telescopes, they are essential for maximizing light gathering and image quality by minimizing internal reflections that can degrade the final image. They are also widely used on LCD screens, solar panels, and other optical instruments where light transmission and minimal reflection are important for performance. Different types of AR coatings exist, ranging from single-layer designs optimized for a specific wavelength to multi-layer designs that provide broader spectral coverage and higher overall reduction in reflection across the visible spectrum.
