Antikorrosions is a field that encompasses strategies, materials, and processes designed to prevent or slow the degradation of metals due to corrosion in harsh environments. The objective is to extend service life, reduce maintenance costs, and improve safety and reliability across industries.

Protection methods are commonly categorized as barrier protection, chemical inhibition, and active protection. Barrier protection uses coatings, paints, plating, and surface treatments to keep the environment away from the metal. Chemical inhibitors are compounds added to fluids or environments that form protective films or reduce the corrosion reactions. Active protection, such as cathodic protection, uses sacrificial anodes or impressed current to shift the metal's electrochemical potential and suppress corrosion.

Design and materials choices also contribute to antigorrosion. Selecting corrosion-resistant alloys, controlling surface finish, avoiding crevices and galvanic couples, and applying proper joining techniques reduce corrosion risk.

Applications include pipelines, ships and offshore structures, bridges, water treatment and storage, automotive components, and electronics enclosures.

Assessment relies on corrosion testing and monitoring. Rates are expressed in millimeters per year or mils per year. Common tests include salt spray (ASTM B117) and electrochemical methods such as impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. Standards bodies such as NACE, ASTM, and ISO publish guidelines for coatings, inhibitors, and protection systems.

Limitations include environmental impact of inhibitors, coating failures, and the need for maintenance and inspection. Antikorrosion strategies are typically tailored to the specific environment, material, and performance requirements.
