Antikoagülan, also known as an anticoagulant, is a class of medications used to prevent and treat blood clots. These drugs work by inhibiting the blood's ability to clot, thereby reducing the risk of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke. Antikoagülans are commonly used in patients with conditions that increase the risk of blood clots, such as atrial fibrillation, heart valve replacement, and certain types of cancer.

There are two main types of antikoagülans: vitamin K antagonists and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Vitamin K antagonists, such as warfarin, work by inhibiting the production of clotting factors in the liver. DOACs, on the other hand, directly target specific clotting factors, such as factor Xa (e.g., rivaroxaban) or thrombin (e.g., dabigatran).

The choice of antikoagülan depends on various factors, including the patient's medical history, the type and severity of the condition, and the presence of any contraindications. Regular monitoring of blood clotting times is necessary to ensure the drug is working effectively and to adjust the dosage as needed.

Antikoagülans are generally well-tolerated, but they can cause side effects such as bleeding, gastrointestinal upset, and skin reactions. Patients should be advised to avoid activities that increase the risk of bleeding, such as heavy exercise or surgery, and to report any unusual bleeding or bruising to their healthcare provider.
