Antifouling systems are methods or substances used to prevent the growth of aquatic organisms on submerged surfaces, most commonly on the hulls of ships and other marine vessels. This growth, known as biofouling, can significantly increase drag, leading to higher fuel consumption and reduced speed. Biofouling can also contribute to corrosion of the hull.

The most common type of antifouling system involves specialized paints applied to the hull. These antifouling paints contain biocides that are slowly released into the water, creating a toxic barrier that deters marine organisms like barnacles, algae, and mussels from attaching. The effectiveness and lifespan of these paints depend on the type of biocide used, the paint formulation, and the operating conditions of the vessel.

Another approach is the use of physical methods. For instance, in-water cleaning systems, such as hull cleaning robots, can mechanically remove biofouling. Some newer technologies involve ultrasonic devices that emit sound waves to disrupt the settlement of fouling organisms. In some cases, advanced hull coatings with superhydrophobic or textured surfaces are being developed to make it more difficult for organisms to adhere.

The choice of antifouling system depends on various factors, including the type of vessel, its operating speed and pattern, the marine environment it operates in, and regulatory requirements concerning the use of biocides. Environmental considerations are increasingly important, leading to the development of more eco-friendly antifouling solutions that minimize the release of harmful substances into the water.
