Antidepressantit is the Finnish plural term for antidepressants, a class of medications primarily used to treat depressive disorders and several other psychiatric and medical conditions. They act on brain neurotransmitter systems—most commonly serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine—to relieve symptoms such as low mood, loss of interest, and impaired functioning.

Major classes include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and atypical agents (e.g., bupropion, mirtazapine). Choice of agent depends on symptom profile, side-effect sensitivity, drug interactions and medical history.

Beyond major depressive disorder, antidepressants are prescribed for anxiety disorders, obsessive–compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, certain chronic pain syndromes and some eating and sleep disorders. Clinical benefits often appear after several weeks of treatment, and many guidelines recommend combined medication and psychotherapy for moderate to severe illness.

Common side effects vary by class and may include gastrointestinal upset, sexual dysfunction, weight changes, sedation or insomnia. Abrupt discontinuation can produce withdrawal symptoms with some agents. Rare but serious risks include serotonin syndrome (with certain drug combinations) and increased suicidal thoughts in children, adolescents and young adults, necessitating monitoring.

Antidepressants are prescription medications regulated by health authorities. Effective and safe use involves individualized selection, dosage adjustment and regular follow-up with a healthcare professional.
