Anticoagulants are also commonly used after certain surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements, to prevent clot formation.

There are several classes of anticoagulants available, with the two main types being vitamin K antagonists and direct-acting anticoagulants. Warfarin is a well-known vitamin K antagonist, requiring regular blood monitoring to ensure the correct dosage. Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) offer a more predictable effect and generally do not require routine blood tests. The choice of anticoagulant depends on the individual's medical condition, other medications they are taking, and their risk of bleeding.

While beneficial, anticoagulants do carry a risk of bleeding, which can range from minor bruising to severe, life-threatening hemorrhages. Patients taking anticoagulants must be aware of this risk and report any unusual bleeding or bruising to their healthcare provider immediately. It is also crucial for patients to adhere strictly to their prescribed dosage and to inform all healthcare professionals, including dentists, that they are taking these medications.
