Anticoagulants are medications that help prevent blood clots from forming or growing larger. They work by interfering with the complex cascade of chemical reactions that lead to blood clotting. Anticoagulants are prescribed for a variety of conditions, including atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats irregularly, increasing the risk of stroke, as well as for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. They are also used after certain surgeries or for individuals with mechanical heart valves.

While beneficial, anticoagulants also carry a risk of bleeding. It is crucial for patients to take these medications exactly as prescribed and to inform their healthcare provider about any other medications or supplements they are taking, as these can interact with anticoagulants. Regular monitoring, particularly for warfarin, is often necessary to ensure the medication is at an effective dose without causing excessive bleeding risk.
