antiLKM1associated refers to the presence of antibodies that target the liver kidney microsomal antigen 1 (LKM1). This antigen is a protein found in liver cells, and its presence can be associated with certain autoimmune liver diseases.

The most common condition linked to antiLKM1 antibodies is autoimmune hepatitis type 2 (AIH-2). This is a chronic inflammatory disease of the liver where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks liver cells. AIH-2 is more frequently observed in children and adolescents, and it can have a more severe course than other types of autoimmune hepatitis.

Detection of antiLKM1 antibodies is a significant diagnostic marker for AIH-2. These antibodies are typically identified through serological testing, often using indirect immunofluorescence or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The presence of antiLKM1 antibodies, especially in conjunction with elevated liver enzymes and characteristic histological findings in a liver biopsy, strongly suggests a diagnosis of AIH-2.

While AIH-2 is the primary association, antiLKM1 antibodies have occasionally been found in other liver conditions, though less consistently. However, their diagnostic specificity for AIH-2 is considered high. Treatment for AIH-2 generally involves immunosuppressive therapy, often with corticosteroids and azathioprine, to manage the autoimmune attack on the liver and prevent further damage and progression to cirrhosis.
