Anthracosilicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling coal dust and silica particles. It is a form of pneumoconiosis, a group of interstitial lung diseases caused by inhaling dust. Anthracosilicosis is most commonly seen in coal miners and workers in industries where both coal and silica are present, such as quarrying and sandblasting.

The disease develops when fine dust particles become embedded in the lungs. The body's immune system tries to clear these foreign particles, leading to inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. Over time, this scarring can become extensive, impairing the lungs' ability to function properly and deliver oxygen to the bloodstream.

Symptoms of anthracosilicosis can vary depending on the severity and stage of the disease. Early stages may be asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms such as a persistent cough or shortness of breath, especially during physical exertion. As the disease progresses, symptoms can worsen, leading to chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and significant respiratory distress. Chest X-rays and lung function tests are typically used for diagnosis.

There is no cure for anthracosilicosis, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing further lung damage. This includes avoiding further exposure to dust, using bronchodilators and other medications to ease breathing, and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Prevention through proper dust control measures and the use of respiratory protective equipment in at-risk occupations is crucial.
