Ansatterepresenterte are individuals elected by employees to represent the workforce in governance processes within a company or organization. They may sit on a company’s board of directors or supervisory board in jurisdictions with co-determination, or participate in workplace bodies such as works councils or safety committees. Their role is to articulate employee interests in decisions affecting working conditions, pay, job security, health and safety, and to support dialogue between management and staff.

Forms and functions vary by country. In some systems, employee representatives have voting rights on boards; in others they act as advisers or hold consultative rather than binding authority. Beyond boards, representatives may participate in works councils or other employee forums that oversee questions of strategy, restructuring, and workforce matters, providing a channel for information and negotiation.

Selection and rights also differ. Representatives are usually elected by employees (often via unions or internal ballots) for defined terms, with rules on independence, confidentiality, and access to information. Laws may specify the scope of topics they can discuss, required notices, and procedures for resolving disputes between management and workers.

Legal frameworks: Employee representation is a form of co-determination, with varying intensity across countries. Germany maintains extensive board-level representation in large firms. Sweden has established frameworks for employee representation in larger joint-stock companies. In Norway, employee involvement is more commonly organized through works councils and safety representatives, with board representation less universal, though some state-owned enterprises provide for employee seats.
