ankerkabels

Ankerkabels are the lines used to secure a vessel by its anchor, forming part of the anchor rode. In Dutch nautical usage, ankerkabel refers to the cable portion of the rode, typically made from steel wire rope or synthetic fiber. Depending on vessel size and seabed conditions, ankerkabels may be used alone or as part of a combined rode with chain and rope.

Materials commonly used for ankerkabels include steel wire rope and synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester. Steel wire rope is strong and abrasion resistant, but heavier and prone to corrosion unless properly protected. Synthetic fibers are lighter, easier to handle, and offer more stretch for shock absorption, though they may be more susceptible to UV damage and wear from chafing. Each material has trade-offs in strength, weight, maintenance, and handling.

Typical setups feature end fittings such as thimbles, sleeves, or sockets, and may include shackles or swivels to prevent twisting. On larger vessels, the rode often combines a short length of chain near the anchor to resist abrasion and provide weight, with the remaining length in rope or cable. On smaller boats, a single ankerkabel may suffice.

Maintenance and safety are important: regularly inspect for corrosion, frayed fibers, broken strands, and abrasion, and replace worn sections. Avoid kinks and store the rode in a dry, clean environment when not in use. Use the appropriate size and working load limits for the vessel and follow local regulations and manufacturers’ guidelines for installation, inspection, and replacement.
