The damaged section is then typically repaired by sewing in a graft, a synthetic tube that replaces or reinforces the weakened area. This method requires significant surgical intervention and a recovery period.

Endovascular repair, also known as endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) or thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for aortic aneurysms, is a less invasive technique. It involves inserting a stent-graft, a fabric-covered metal mesh tube, through a small incision in an artery, usually in the groin. This stent-graft is then guided to the aneurysm site using imaging guidance and deployed to reinforce the vessel wall, excluding the aneurysm from blood flow.

The choice between open surgery and endovascular repair depends on several factors, including the size and location of the aneurysm, the patient's overall health, and the anatomy of the blood vessel. Both procedures carry risks, and the decision for reconstruction is made after careful evaluation by a medical team to weigh the potential benefits against the risks. Regular follow-up imaging is crucial after any type of aneurysm reconstruction to monitor the repair and detect any potential complications.
