Androgeenien is a broad term referring to a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of male characteristics, though they are present in both sexes. The primary and most well-known androgen is testosterone. Other significant androgens include androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). These hormones are synthesized mainly in the testes in males and the ovaries and adrenal glands in females, though the adrenal glands produce them in both sexes.

In males, androgens are essential for the development of secondary sexual characteristics during puberty, such as the deepening of the voice, growth of facial and body hair, and increased muscle mass and bone density. They are also critical for sperm production and maintaining libido throughout adulthood. In females, androgens are present in smaller amounts and contribute to libido, bone health, and muscle maintenance. They also play a role in the development of pubic and axillary hair.

The production and activity of androgens are regulated by a complex feedback system involving the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. When androgen levels are low, the hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH). LH then signals the testes to produce more testosterone. Conversely, high androgen levels suppress GnRH and LH release. Imbalances in androgen levels can lead to various health issues, including infertility, changes in body composition, and mood disturbances.
